I would have liked to get this note to you sooner as you and your teams have been on my mind all week.
I sincerely appreciate your support for the elementary school sports program. Early on, you understood the vision and saw the value in bringing schools and communities together around sports. From that leadership, you opened the door for what I witnessed this past Saturday. The programs at Prosser and Austin were great: the gyms were full, the staff was on board, and the schools were buzzing with students and adults alike.
Even more, the Steinmetz program was impeccable and Principal Stephen Ngo and Site Manager Robin Russo should be commended for all their hard work. Everything was well organized and thought out far beyond any other school in the city. I was greeted at the door by a friendly “minion” with information for families about the schedule and the school. The environment was very welcoming and organized for games, concessions, practice space, and tours. There were tons of volunteers to ensure that each student’s experience was positive. The site manager shared some of her excellent ideas for how they can engage the students and families during downtime. Their embrace of this program is exactly where the vision is meant to go in an attempt to restore the neighborhood high school as a social center for the community. This can lead to great things for everyone involved and I am really excited to see how Steinmetz implements their ideas over the upcoming weeks—without question, they are the best practice for this program and I will be using their example with all current and future sites.
As an alumnus of Steinmetz I can’t tell you how proud I was to be a “Silver Streak.”
Thank you again,
Randy
Information by athletic director Robin Russo
When I was a freshman at 5’1, I weighed 197 pounds and was close to getting diabetes.
One day out of school I saw the boys track and field team practicing and I thought to myself, “I want to run like them someday.”
That day I went home and told myself I can make my dreams come true. All I needed was a push and that push came when I saw the track team practice.
So I ran and ran and ran. It took me one year to lose 60 pounds. I now currently weigh 130 pounds.
To anybody who reads this I leave you off with these thoughts:
In life you will come to a point where you want to give up, where you will accept what people think about you because you believe it’s true. I say it’s all lies.
You can become anything you want in life by working hard and dreaming big.
If your dreams don’t scare you then you’re not dreaming big enough.
To all my friends that I have met in the last four years – I want to say thank you and hope you all do great in life and never give up because I’ll be cheering on for you.

Our girls track team is amazing and we left it all out on the track this season. There was an awesome group of newcomers this season. The team showed a lot of heart out there on the track and on the field.
The incredible Coach Abel Pereyra taught us all how to push ourselves further than what we thought we were capable of. You learn a lot about yourself as a track athlete.
The team banquet on May 28 and was a great way to close out the year. Many academic awards were presented to our athletes. It was a sweet evening and I will miss my track girls, but don’t worry because this is not the last you see of me.
This year’s individual award winners as presented by Coach P follow:
Most Valuable Athletes: Cintia Garcia and Diana Herrera
Sprinter of the Year: Brenda Lopez
Distance Runner of the Year: Brenda Escalante
Most Improved Athlete: Arely Morales
Best New Athlete: Maria Figueroa
Extraordinary Leadership Award: Karla Solis
Team Spirit Award: Vivian Palma
]]>I played volleyball all four years and I played softball for three. Being in the IB program it was even harder to keep up with everything because there is so much work and sports take up so much of your time. Sports helps your grades because you must maintain a certain gap in order to be eligible to play so you are very conscious of your grades.
My advice for other students is to learn time management. This will be an ideal thing for the future.
I would like to send a huge shout out to Ms. Chaparro who pushed me to be the best I could be. She has always been there for me and she has become like a mother to me. She has played a huge role in my success and I could never repay her for everything she has done.
Also, I would like to send a shout out to Ms. Barnes. She has been there for me as well through every difficult moment that I go through. I will always be grateful for these two people.
My last shout out goes to Mr. Everage who is my twin. We are so alike and I will never meet another person like you.
These past four years at Steinmetz have been amazing, but now I am ready to continue my education at Illinois Wesleyan and make new memories.
