Prom 2017 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2017/06/prom-2017/ http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2017/06/prom-2017/#respond Wed, 14 Jun 2017 16:49:32 +0000 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/?p=5458 This year’s prom such a wonderful success. A total of 275 people reserved for dinner, and quite a few more staff came afterward to dance and celebrate with our seniors.

Adriana Cortes and Christhian Torres were crowned prom queen and king.

“There are many people whom I would like to than,” Ms. Russo said, in an email to staff. “First, thank you to everyone who donated jars. They made fabulous centerpieces. On that theme, thank you to Ms. Szulkowski and selected seniors who turned those lowly pickle and jelly jars into beautiful lanterns. Almost all of the lanterns were taken home by students as keepsakes of the evening.

Some students’ photos did not make it into the print edition of the Star.

“Thank you also to the administration, Ms. Williams and Mr. Jaramillo, for attending and to Sam Pearson, Noah Washington and Laura Jimenez for working security for the evening.

“Thank you to the following teachers for celebrating the evening with our kids – forgive me if I miss anyone!
Mr. Roldan, Ms. Childs, Ms. Serritella, Ms. Walker, Mr. Mink, Ms. Zaluba, Ms. Woodward, Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Hasken, Mr. Mendrano and Mrs. Mendrano as well as former teachers Ms. Cotto and Mr. Moore.

“Thank you to Mr. McNulty, Mr. Ochoa, Candido Martinez and Ms. Eichstaedt for making sure that SCORE ran smoothly while we were preparing for prom. You have made that program the success it is!

“And my heartfelt thanks to Angel DeJesus, Gina Szulkowski, Marie Chaparro and Emily Holley for getting there early to help set up and staying late to take everything down – and everything in between. You guys are the best.

“I love working with seniors. This is a special time for all of them. I hope that everyone will take a moment to wish them all well as they leave Steinmetz and move on to the next phases of their lives.”

Steinmetz hosts elementary schools in CPS SCORE http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2017/01/steinmetz-hosts-cps-score/ http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2017/01/steinmetz-hosts-cps-score/#respond Sun, 22 Jan 2017 02:43:28 +0000 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/?p=5060 Steinmetz is playing host to a nine-week Saturday elementary school program called CPS SCORE!  (Sports Can Open Roads to Excellence), with sixth through eighth grade boys and girls basketball teams playing a tournament, coordinated through Sports Administration in conjunction with the Chicago Park District.
Senior student volunteers work as hall guards, score book keepers, scoreboard/clock operators, concession stand vendors, balcony monitors, and general runners during the eight-hour day. The elementary schools in the tournaments are Chicago Academy Elementary School, CICS West Belden Prussing Elementary School, Sayre Elementary Language Academy, Locke Elementary School, Reinberg Elementary School and Smyser Elementary School.
Calling our program “impeccable,” Randy Ernst, the Executive Director of the CPS Office of Sports and Administration, praised Steinmetz in a letter he wrote to Network 3 Chief of Schools Randel Josserand:

Chief Josserand,

I would have liked to get this note to you sooner as you and your teams have been on my mind all week.

I sincerely appreciate your support for the elementary school sports program. Early on, you understood the vision and saw the value in bringing schools and communities together around sports. From that leadership, you opened the door for what I witnessed this past Saturday. The programs at Prosser and Austin were great: the gyms were full, the staff was on board, and the schools were buzzing with students and adults alike.

Even more, the Steinmetz program was impeccable and Principal Stephen Ngo and Site Manager Robin Russo should be commended for all their hard work. Everything was well organized and thought out far beyond any other school in the city. I was greeted at the door by a friendly “minion” with information for families about the schedule and the school. The environment was very welcoming and organized for games, concessions, practice space, and tours. There were tons of volunteers to ensure that each student’s experience was positive. The site manager shared some of her excellent ideas for how they can engage the students and families during downtime. Their embrace of this program is exactly where the vision is meant to go in an attempt to restore the neighborhood high school as a social center for the community. This can lead to great things for everyone involved and I am really excited to see how Steinmetz implements their ideas over the upcoming weeks—without question, they are the best practice for this program and I will be using their example with all current and future sites.

As an alumnus of Steinmetz I can’t tell you how proud I was to be a “Silver Streak.”

Thank you again,

Randy

Turkey Bowl kicks off Thanksgiving break http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/11/1951/ http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/11/1951/#respond Sat, 15 Nov 2014 11:35:38 +0000 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/?p=1951 Our annual Turkey Bowl is coming up soon.  This year, the traditional football team vs. faculty game will be held on the front campus on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 1:30 p.m.

The Steinmetz Star Turkey Bowl photo is from 2009 when the game was played at Hanson Stadium. Click on image to see the large group of half-time dancers.

Students can begin buying tickets for $4 at student services beginning Monday, Nov. 17.  Tickets excuse students from periods 6 – 8. Just a reminder that this is a Tuesday game, as we have no school the day before Thanksgiving (on Wednesday). Please spread the word to the students.  In addition, if staff members are interested in playing in this time honored tradition, please let athletic director Robin Russo or football coach Tim McNulty know.

Coaches take ALS Ice Bucket Challenge http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/08/coaches-take-als-ice-bucket-challenge/ http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/08/coaches-take-als-ice-bucket-challenge/#comments Sun, 31 Aug 2014 10:29:58 +0000 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/?p=1161

The coaching staff, led by athletic director Robin Russo, took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on August 29, to raise awareness of the disease and inspire people to donate money to help research a cure. See http://www.alsa.org for more information about ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.
