Losing a loved one to cancer is not an experience to remember. It’s a pain to watch them slowly leave Earth while cancer changes them from the person you once knew.

There is hope to find a cure. Steinmetz occasionaly sponsors fund raisers to find a cure for cancer. But the fund raising events do not have to be in school for one to help find a cure.

Light the Night Walk is a fundraising campaign of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) which brings together families and communities to honor blood cancer survivors, as well as those lost to the diseases, and shine a light on the importance of finding cures and providing access to treatments for blood cancer patients.

The event will be take place downtown at Grant Park on Oct. 18. Walkers can raise funds and participate as individuals or on a team with friends, family and co-workers.

Everyone is encouraged to go to this event if possible. If not, participate in another event that comes your way. Any type of donation helps make a step closer to finding a cure.

One Goal provides summer out-of-state college experience http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/09/one-goal-provides-summer-out-of-state-college-program/ http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/2014/09/one-goal-provides-summer-out-of-state-college-program/#respond Fri, 26 Sep 2014 19:59:22 +0000 http://steinmetzstar.com/wordpress/?p=1308 By Jen Padilla

Thanks to One Goal, seniors Tatiana Matias and Alondra Silva studied at Franklin and Marshall College in Pennsylvania over the summer.

“We were part of a huge group from all over the United States,” Alondra said. “In this program, they helped us with our personal statements, college interviews, and more. I had a great time because we did a lot of great work and activities, like our trip to D.C, canoeing and a talent show.”

The experience gave the students the experience of living at an out-of-state college.

“My summer experience was very liberating,” Tatiana said. “Living in a dorm with a total stranger was not bad. My roomie had plenty of snacks for the stay. The work was challenging but it helped to have study groups after class. It was great meeting kids from all around the country.”
