Cross country hosts ‘Fall Frolic’

The boys cross country team came in fourth place in the 2-mile ‘Fall Frolic’ hosted by Steinmetz. In its third year, the meet was had its  biggest field of teams yet for the race at Riis Park held on Sept. 9.

The Streaks have already competed in two meets – the XC Festival on Sept. 5 and the Hokum Karem relay on August 29.

“We kicked off our season with this old school relay-style competition in which pairs of athletes alternate running miles,” Coach Abel Pereyra reported on his webpage.

“Sometimes it gets a little crazy, but really is a ton of fun!  The heavy rain that began at about 6:00 a.m. was still going strong by the 9:00 a.m. gun. Sloshing through soaked fields and sliding across thick patches of mud really added a nice twist to an already challenging course. That said, our athletes managed to become one with the race.

“Our relays pairs Rubi Trujillo and Adriana Espinoza, Melanie Rolon and Leticia Perez, Jahira Damian and Maria Figueroa and Captain Karla Colula and Jasmine Damian ran to an 8th place team finish.  And it really seemed like the conditions made their performances better.”

At the next meet, the team ran in rain again.

“Not surprisingly, we found ourselves standing in pouring rain again at race time,” Coach P. reported.  “The JV team ran the whole race in a downpour.”

Thanks to Coach P. for sharing information and pictures:
