An intramural chess tournament on Jan. 23, hosted by teacher James Saunders, had a great turn-out with 16 students competing in four elimination rounds.
“The students were very focused as most of the games were hard fought,” Mr. Saunders said.
In the end it came down to brother and sister Gerson Munoz and Genesis Munoz. “They battled for over 30 minutes before Gerson exclaimed check mate!” Mr. Saunders said.
For most students, it was their first time competing in a chess tournament. A few students commented on how nice it was to have to use their brains. There will be another tournament in the spring with an even bigger turn-out. “As an educator, it was nice to see students voluntarily engage in an intellectual pursuit,” Mr. Saunders said. “Ms. Paulette and I are very proud of the students who came out.”
